Favorite Children’s Novel of 2014

Posted by in Book Review

This middle grade novel is my favorite one so far this year. It is a perfect gem of a book! Two dads + four boys = a family full of mayhem and mishaps; humor and heart.

Each of the brothers has school and friend challenges that he must navigate throughout the book. Every chapter focuses on a different brother, while weaving the other brothers’ stories into his. The chapters begin with funny little notes, emails, texts, invitations, etc. from one family member to another.

I loved each brother and his individual story; I loved Papa and Dad and their individual parenting styles. I loved the cranky next-door neighbor; I loved the youngest brother’s imaginary cheetah. Basically, I loved everything about this book! It would make a terrific read aloud.

The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher (2014, Delacorte) is Dana Alison Levy’s first published book. It has received starred reviews from Kirkus and School Library Journal. The sequel, A Fletcher Family Summer, is due out in Spring of 2016.
